Stop the War in Ukraina

Stop the war in Ukraina open letter

Stop the War! Stop It Now! You Have the Power. And the Responsibility

European statesmen, much like during the First World War, are like sleepwalkers, surrendering to a current that could lead to yet another global war. Germany’s Foreign Minister says we are at war with Russia. The Chairman of NATO’s Military Committee assures us that a group of countries led by the U.S. is prepared for direct conflict with Russia. Meanwhile, the U.S. President assesses that the war in Ukraine poses a direct threat of nuclear armageddon. Ominous talk of nuclear threats echoes from Moscow.

Ukraine is the victim of a proxy war between two leading nuclear superpowers, Russia and the U.S., over spheres of influence. Once, both were on the right side of history.

Heavy offensive tanks on the Ukrainian-Russian front further increase the risk of direct conflict between Russia and the West on our European soil. The speculation of military experts that a nuclear war is unlikely is no guarantee of safety.

However, the accumulation of the deadliest weapons will not bring peace and stability to Europe. In this war, we are all losers. This includes the citizens of the EU, who are also paying for this war and its consequences. The burden of this war will be carried by future generations of Europeans. Therefore, European states must also participate in the decision to end the war.

We demand that the governments of EU countries establish a new, long-term European security architecture that reflects the strategic interests of European nations and their more active role in the world. It must be based on sovereignty, equality, and respect for the security interests of all countries. Including Russia, which remains, in one form or another, a neighbor of the EU for the foreseeable future.

We call on the governments of the EU, NATO, and the Russian Federation to build upon the European Eastern Policy of former German Chancellor Willy Brandt, which brought decades of peace to our continent. We urge them to commit to updating the Helsinki Final Act on peace and cooperation and to respect it.

Political rhetoric about losers and winners contradicts the language of peace. In this war, no side can win. It can only end at the negotiating table. Negotiating does not mean capitulating or justifying Russian aggression. Negotiating means responsibly seeking solutions and making compromises on both sides to prevent further loss of life and escalation of evil.

From you, the governments of the European Union, NATO, the United States of America, and the Russian Federation, we therefore expect the establishment of an alliance to cease hostilities, halt further arms buildup, and initiate negotiations. Your responsibility also extends to the future of the world, to peace, security, and combating climate change! It is about the lives of our children and their descendants in a world free of fear, a world that ensures the survival of humanity.

The governments of the European Union, NATO, the United States of America, and the Russian Federation do not have a mandate for war! Do not bring it to our doorsteps.

Stop the war! Stop it now! You have the power. And the responsibility.
